Course Overview

This qualification reflects the role of hairdressers who use a range of well-developed sales, consultation and technical skills and knowledge to provide a broad range of hairdressing services to clients. They use discretion and judgement to provide client services and take responsibility for the outcomes of their own work.

This qualification provides a pathway to work as a hairdresser in any industry environment, usually a salon.

Entry Requirements

Excel College Australia has the following entry requirements:

Students must:

  • Be at least 18 years of age.
  • Participate in a course entry interview to determine your suitability for the course and your support needs.
  • Be at least 18 years of age.

Have sufficient language, literacy and numeracy (LLN) skills, for example, to read materials relevant to the course, participate in discussions and observations and apply numerical concepts such as in relation to financial transactions and time management.  Students will need to achieve ACSF level 2 for reading, writing, numeracy and oral communication to enter the course. This will be tested through the course entry process and an online assessment, for which you will be sent a link.

Course Duration

This qualification will be delivered over 49 weeks, including 40 weeks of training and assessment spread over 4 terms of 10 weeks. There is also 9 weeks of holidays. Holidays are 3 weeks per term.

Class sessions are planned to ensure that students have a mixture of practical and theoretical components and those classes cater for a wide variety of learning styles.  Additionally, workplace practices and environments are simulated and used to conduct skills based assessments in accordance with unit requirements.

This qualification is offered on the following days and times:

Monday to Friday 9 am to 4.30 pm (including a lunch break of 30 minutes).

This course will be delivered face-to-face in a classroom-based setting which also includes a fully functioning salon with real clients.

Students who complete this course may be able to seek employment in hairdressing roles.

Education Pathways

Students who complete this course may wish to continue their education into the SHB40215 Certificate IV in Hairdressing or into a range of other Certificate IV level qualifications.

Enrolment & Orientation

Upon acceptance of a student’s application for enrolment, a letter of offer, as well as a written agreement and tax invoice for remaining fees, will be forwarded to students. Students will need to read all provided information as it will provide all necessary information about the course of study.  An enrolment confirmation will be issued once the signed acceptance of the offer and written agreement are received.

Training Arrangement

Students are required to attend training and assessment for 35 hours a week and complete approximately 2 hours of homework per week. Timetable information will be provided in the student’s Letter of Offer and Student agreement.

Assessment Arrangements

Assessment methods used for this qualification will provide a range of ways for individuals to demonstrate that they have met the required outcomes including:

  • Report writing
  • Observations
  • Questioning (oral or written)
  • Log book

At the beginning of each unit, trainers will outline the assessment tasks that must be completed.
